My next article for Destination Z is tentatively titled "New Innovations We Need on the Mainframe" and I'm planning to review a number of areas that have occurred to me since I was a new mainframer. Back when I started in 1987, we already had PC's (but not Windows) with things like keyboard macros and mouse interaction, and I was surprised to discover that 3270 terminals didn't enable such customization (except for the keystroke recorder).
Today, there are many new areas where innovations have kept the mainframe ahead of the leading edge of every other technology, but it still has room to improve in many additional dimensions, not least of reasons being, as I like to say, "The better you get, the more room you have for improvement."
Besides, as an experienced mainframer, I think there are a lot of things I've just come to accept and given up on changing without even realizing it.
So, I was wondering if you had any suggestions you'd like me to consider for my article that we've ignored, overlooked, or not discovered yet, that would take the mainframe to the next level?
